Machine Shop Basics - Metal Lathe Intro

This beginner-friendly class introduces students to one of the most important machines in modern manufacturing: the metal lathe. Using our Precision Matthews PM-1228VF lathe, students will learn how raw metal is transformed into precise, functional parts through controlled cutting operations.

The class covers essential shop safety, a guided tour of lathe components, and hands-on instruction in fundamental machining operations including facing, turning, drilling, parting, and an introduction to threading. Students will learn how to properly set up workpieces, select and position cutting tools, and measure their work accurately.

Designed for beginners with little to no machining experience, this class emphasizes safe operation, mechanical understanding, and practical skills. By the end of the session, each student will have machined a small metal part and gained a solid foundation for future metalworking and machining projects.
